Function of Mattress Materials
Bonnell Coil mattress systems are the most traditional type of innerspring mattresses. Bonnell springs resemble an hourglass shape, with the ends of the wire knotted together around the top and bottom to create the spring system. The main benefit of Bonnell spring mattresses is durability, allowing it to withstand heavier use. Moreover, this mattress type is the most affordable, while still providing good support for the body at rest.
Pocket coil mattresses are the most popular type of innerspring mattresses available. Pocket coils are springs wrapped individually in a fabric sleeve. This benefits the sleeper as the pocket coils react to pressure independently instead of together, which minimizes movement through the mattress. Pocket coil mattresses also evenly distribute weight, which provides relief for aching shoulders, back and hips.
Memory foam, often referred to as “visco-elastic foam”, consists primarily of polyurethane, which was first developed by NASA in 1966 for use in airplane seats. The foam cells are open, which creates a matrix through which air can move. The main characteristic of memory foam is that it softens in reaction to body heat, allowing the foam to mold to one’s body very quickly. Since memory foam mattresses are typically denser than other mattress types, it is more supportive, provides excellent pressure relief and reduces the transfer of movement by contouring one’s body.
Gel memory foam is memory foam that is infused with gel. Gel memory foam has the same general feel as memory foam. However, the gel microbeads infused in the mattress are designed to retain less heat and keep one’s body temperature cool throughout the night. Furthermore, gel-infused memory foam provides a denser and more supportive feel, which gives added durability & comfort. JBM EON also infused natural extracts such as charcoal, copper and lavender in our CertiPUR-US Certified memory foam for further sleep benefits.
Latex Mattresses are renown for being natural, healthy and durable. Latex mattresses provide optimal posture support and allow for proper spine alignment. Latex also distributes heat away from the body, thus lowering one’s body temperature throughout the night. Furthermore, latex is known to have low VOC exposure, meaning one is not exposed to harmful chemicals. Latex mattresses are ideal for individuals who prefer a mattress with more bounce, faster response time and a more generalized compression.
